I recently had the chance to ask several cool rowing coaches this question:

What is the most important equipment thing you do before you launch your crew to race?

Here are their responses.

Notice any common themes?

Here is the list of those coaches:

  • Ashleigh Genevich, Washington College
  • Mike Hughes, United States Naval Academy
  • Chris O’Brien, Philadelphia University
  • Laura Ratz, University of Delaware
  • Nicky Stimpson, United States Naval Academy
  • Peter Wells, Williams College
  • Dr. Gavin White, Temple University
  • Steve Kish, Bucknell University

Classy group. Thanks coaches!

And what do you do? Let us know below . . .

  • Winsor Pilates

  1. John says:

We make sure the coxswain has the oar lock keys, the rowers applied their crab repellent, the tail wind wax is on and the bow ball pressure is checked.

  2. Terry Grindstaff says:

I found the common advise from these coaches of making making sure all the rigging is tight before a race as good common sense. No mystery, no magic.

  3. Ron Boi says:

Bring that cell phone,,,,for safety! and that victory meal order from Jimmy Johns?

Stay afloat my friends, Ron Boi

  4. Mike says:

    @ John . . . Ha! Ha!

@ Terry . . .you are right, little magic, but maybe some mystery, in that why don’t more coaches do the basic tips? Stress, don’t know how? Thoughts on that?

    @ Ron . . yes to both.

  5. Dave DeIuliis says:

there was a common theme? I need to re-watch this. Ha, just kidding. It all seems basic enough-but I have always found that the things that should go without saying should be said.
