Step Three: Determine the Amount Of Money You May Spend.
The purchase of rowing equipment can put a fairly hefty ding in your wallet. And depending on what you want/need to buy, you could be looking at a massive amount of money. For instance, an elite-level men’s eight used to compete at the World Rowing Championships may cost between $25,000 and $40,000, and that is just for the shell. Then there are the electronics, oars, and transportation to the event. All this can add up to a large price tag. A dose of reality.
Grab a pencil, make sure it has a sharp point on it, and let’s figure out exactly how much money you may spend. Take a moment and read those last words of that sentence once again. It reads “how much money you may spend.” And that is exactly what you want to know. Not to be confused with “how much you want to spend.”
Those are little words that make a big difference. Many people have bought rowing equipment and have gotten themselves into hot water (actually boiling water) because they didn’t know the bottom line. The bottom line is how much money you are able to spend without sending yourself into a stressful financial state that has a negative impact–especially on the home front. Yes, it may make you a little faster to get that spiffy looking, state-of-the-art, whiz-bang boat. However, if you don’t have time to row it because you had to get a second job to pay for it, what good does it do you?
What I do when planning a purchase for my team when there is a demonstrated need is to do a detailed budget (which is covered in Step 6.) Admittedly, I’m more anal than most, but a budget that you can work with that is likely to get the approval of whoever is going to sign the check or purchase order (or who is going to give you hell if you made the purchase and should not have) is invaluable. Pretty simply, I just divide a piece of paper into two columns, or use a spreadsheet, and on one side put expenses, and on the other, income. For this step here, you are concerned about income.
So where is your money going to come from? If you’ve got it in the bank, then move on to the next step (as long as you know you can spend it). But if you don’t have the money, but you do have the need, it seems like it is fundraising time for you. For help with this contact USRowing for any materials they may have.
