Get The Results You Want From Your Rowing

In this brief video—just over 4 minutes long—I review 3 simple items. I use them to improve my chances of getting the results I want from my rowing.
They are very simple steps, which, honestly, I sometimes forget to do because I get so busy and focused on a task (yeah, lame, I know . . .). However, when I do these steps my results are always better.
Again, those 3 items are:
- Define the results you want
- Quantify the results (determine goal times, weight to lose, # of parties you get invited to)
- Evaluate
I know these steps are not rocket science, but if you were going to launch a rocket they just might help.
Go Fast . . .
And keep your eyes peeled for the release of my book Finding Happiness Sitting On Your Butt Going Backwards in ebook form. Will be coming out soon.

Mike,
I row for the University at Albany and our current coach, Todd Rutecki, sent us an e-mail with this video in it. It’s funny to say but our goal right now is to SET goals. This summer we’ll be working on gaining more power and strength for next season by setting and hopefully achieving these goals. I watched this with some of the guys from our MV8 and it really helped put things into perspective for us. Thanks for the video.
Sincerely,
Ben Rea
@ Ben . . . glad you liked it . . . but keep in mind that this is not really *goal* setting, in your typical sense.
Goal setting tends to lead many folks off into the world of *it ain’t going to really happen*, and instead, here you pick a result you want, and nail it down. A small difference, but noticeable one, because when you focus on a result, a specific one, the chance of it happening increase dramatically.
So your men’s V8, which is probably racing @ the Vails might say, *Yeah, let’s make the finals!* A good goal. But what if they try a specific result, say, let’s focus on rowing a 6:00 race. And then you set up your speed coach, and see if they can put together practices that can produce that speed. Then you’ve greatly improved the chance of it happening. And afterwards you eval.
Make it? Great!
Didn’t make it? Figure out how to improve.
Make sense??
Ok, yes. Well our specific result is a 6:20 for next year (so we can hopefully make it to grand finals at states). Keep in mind we entered a MV8 for the first time this year since 1994 so making finals would be an excellent accomplishment. Thanks for the clarification. Your advice is welcomed anytime Mike.
