HOW TO MAXIMIZE YOUR ROWING EQUIPMENT

Rowing coaches work hard to produce the best teams possible. They focus on recruiting, training, skill development, and racing strategies. Unfortunately, many of those same coaches often don’t focus on one important thing-how best to utilize their rowing equipment. And this misstep often comes back to haunt them.

Time and time again rowing coaches’ and rowers’ best efforts are thwarted by problems that arise with their rowing equipment, especially in transporting the equipment. Often the outcome of these problems is not pretty such as: rowers being injured from using poorly adjusted or maintained equipment, or races being missed due to rowing equipment that did not arrive on time.

“Rowing coaches work so hard to get their jobs done, and are under great pressure to perform, that often their focus is the team’s performance and not the equipment,” stated Mike Davenport, Ed.D., Head Rowing Coach at Washington College, in Chestertown, Maryland. “And by forgetting the equipment, or not giving it the complete attention that it needs, athletes, their performance, and the equipment can be at risk.”

Wishing to help rowing coaches and rowers alike get the most out of their equipment, Dr. Davenport conceived, authored, and produced the first edition of the book Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging in 1992. Since then, the book has been the most popular book about rowing equipment and rigging ever written. This tenth anniversary edition builds on the success of the first addition and presents in over one-hundred and fifty steps how to maximize rowing equipment.

Produced in paperback book form, Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging directs coaches and rowers through a series of tasks that are clearly written. “One of the best indications that this book will be helpful,” Davenport says, “comes from comments I often get from rowing coaches when they read the book. Wow . . . I didn’t know that.”

Long Review: Approx. 614 words

Book review for Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging: One Hundred and Fifty Steps to Help You Get the Most From the Rigging of Your Rowing Equipment. By Mike Davenport, Ed.D.

For Immediate Release

“Go to your local bookstore and look for a book on rigging. Not much of a selection, is there? But notice all the books on every other subject known to man. Why the difference?

“For a multitude of reasons, there is a lot of secrecy, confusion, and mystery surrounding rigging. Starting here, I hope to take away some of the mystique about rigging and rowing equipment, and to help you get comfortable with it.”

And so begins the tenth anniversary edition of the pioneering book, Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging: One Hundred and Fifty Steps to Help You Get the Most From the Rigging of Your Rowing Equipment, by Mike Davenport, Ed.D. (SportWork, 2002).

This refreshing book is an entertaining and needed resource for rowing coaches who must often handle great quantities of equipment, but who often are not given the direction or the resources to do the job. While coaches are under more and more pressure to be competitive, they are also under increased demand to purchase, maintain, adjust, and transport equipment. Just recently a study was done that indicated that 41% of rowing coaches were moderately to highly stressed by rigging.

An informative, soft-cover book, Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging acts more as a guide than a how-to-book. It addresses many concerns coaches have about equipment, rigging, and rowing, and puts rigging in a light that often is not shined, that of not being a tedious chore, but instead of being fun and enjoyable. Loaded with diagrams, the book gently guides coaches to excel with something that many coaches dislike.

The book is filled with specific, well-written steps that address getting the most from rowing equipment. It also contains many different procedures and jobs that need to be completed to get the most from that equipment. This was the first book written specifically about rigging in such a style, and has been the best selling book on rigging ever written.

Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging assumes that the vast majority of coaches and rowers want to rig their equipment well. However, it is often those same folks who struggle with rigging, wasting time, energy, and sometimes their boat’s speed because they don’t have the tools or knowledge to get the job done right. In an aggressive fashion the book gives the reader the guidance, encouragement, and direction so that he or she can do the job well.

Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging has receiving national and international acclaim. Dean Travis Clarke, Executive Editor of Sport Fishing, Marlin, Fly Fishing in Saltwaters and Boating Life Magazines, and host of Sport Fishing TV stated that, “Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging is one of the finest examples of technical writing I’ve ever seen.” And George Kirschbaum, author of the Down and Dirty Guide to Coxing wrote that the Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging is “The one book I DON’T lend out. . . it’s too valuable not to have on my bookshelf.” Joe Murtaugh, lightweight men’s coach at Princeton University and two-time World Champion coach of the US Men’s Lightweight Eight stated, “(this book is) a must read. This book demystifies and simplifies rigging. Full of useful, practical information. Every serious coach should own this book.”

Rowing coaches, especially collegiate coaches, are under a lot of pressure from many avenues. They need information and tools to work with their equipment in a positive and constructive way. Nuts and Bolts Guide to Rigging is a book whose time has come and fills that need. It will help those coaches and rowers do what needs to be done to keep themselves, their programs, and their equipment in the best shape possible.
