Good post. Hard to believe there would be doubt about the need for a system, since it seems to permeate other major elite sports (just look at the coaches for college football or basketball). However, it's also important to critically evaluate your system at the end of every season, and tailor it to your improved understanding of boat mechanics, or even for who will be in the boat the following season. The best teachers and coaches always seem to be able to find a way to slightly adjust their message to get the most from their students and rowers.

In my mind system is just another name for structure... and without Structure it is very hard to build anything. Even if you could build something... experience sucess... without a system=structure=blueprint, how would you be able to reproduce it...

Interesting but not surprising that the subject of a 'system' arises. Every activity we do benefits from the efficiency of a system. Also not surprising is a mention of Allen Rosenberg. Anyone ever notice how many successful coaches at the Junior, High School, College and Elite level have training and mentoring roots that go back to Vesper in the late sixties and early seventies ? Allen and Dietrich Rose taught a generation of us how it's done.

I'm not to sure why Ron would consider a system cheating, the beauty about a system is that you can have the same success with different systems. The thing to keep in mind is that an effective system is tailored, or applied specifically to a rower or crew. For example, if you're coaching a four and one rower is opening their back a bit at the catch, they need to have quicker legs on the drive. You're not going to make the rowers who have a good leg drive do the same drill or assign them the same work, that one rower will work on faster legs and the others will work on what they need to work on.

I'm curious tho, to me having a pair try to keep the whole eight going sounds a little strange, but feeling sore backs at the end of a practice is a dangerous thing, are they rowing with straight backs, if not then that's a big problem, they could blow a disk.
